Our purpose:
Energize play a significant role in tackling health inequalities. Our vision to eliminate inactivity and core purpose to improve the quality of people’s lives through physical activity, leaves us in a unique position to influence various systems.
Our connectivity with the health system has grown considerably since the pandemic, also positioning ourselves to gain evidence first-hand of the impact physical activity can have on improving wider health outcomes.
Our role as an Active Partnership is essential in tackling health inequalities as we bring together diverse expertise, resources, and perspectives, enabling comprehensive and coordinated efforts. Through our work, we can address the root causes of disparities, implement effective interventions, and ensure that all communities have equitable access to quality healthcare.
Why do we need to influence the health sector?
Enhancing mobility and balance within the first 48 hours of hospital admission prevents hospital-associated deconditioning, leading to improved physical functioning, shorter recovery times and reduced hospital stays.
Physical inactivity costs the NHS £7.4 billion annually.
1 in 4 people would be more active if spoken to by a health care professional.
Healthcare is one of the 7 best ways of tackling population physical inactivity, and thus making every contact count is critical.
The importance of prevention:
Prevention of Chronic Diseases: Regular physical activity is a key factor in preventing chronic diseases such as heart disease, diabetes, and obesity. By encouraging physical activity, healthcare providers can significantly reduce the incidence of these conditions.
Improved Patient Outcomes: Physical activity is associated with improved overall health and well-being. Patients who engage in regular exercise often experience better outcomes, including faster recovery times and enhanced quality of life.
Cost-Effective Healthcare: Promoting physical activity can reduce healthcare costs by decreasing the need for medication and medical interventions. Active patients are less likely to require frequent hospital visits and long-term care.
Holistic Patient Care: Integrating physical activity recommendations into primary and secondary care supports a more holistic approach to patient health, addressing not just medical issues but also lifestyle factors that contribute to overall well-being.
Empowering Patients: Educating patients about the benefits of physical activity empowers them to take an active role in their health management, leading to more sustained health improvements and better adherence to treatment plans.
Social Prescribing: Raising awareness of the role community activities can play in supporting people to self-manage their low level health issues, encourages people to connect socially with others whilst moving more.
