As a nationwide initiative, School Games has a vision to make a clear and meaningful difference to the lives of even more children and young people. It’s mission is putting physical activity and competitive sport at the heart of schools and providing more young people with the opportunity to compete and achieve their personal best.

Take a look at our School Games 2022-23 video to see the various activities 1,952 pupils have participated in:

What this means for Shropshire, Telford & Wrekin

School Games Organisers aligned what they offered this year to meet the needs of the Schools and young people in their area. This year there has been less focus on competition pathway through to county festivals and finals and instead a more rounded offer to provide a blend of engaging, inspiring and competitive events.

What this looks like for 2022/23

Events across the year fell into one of three categories – ‘Engage’, ‘Inspire’ and ‘Compete’ which will give Secondary Schools a blended offer of non-competitive and competitive events.

Engage
– For the 23/24 academic year we will be running three Year 7 transition events at the Arthog Outreach centres in Telford & Shrewsbury. These events focus on teamwork, communication and having fun whilst being active! We are also running a Young Leaders programme for Secondary School pupils to support our events across the year. In the Spring, our annual inclusion event at the Cavalier Centre will take place for pupils who have a physical disability.

Inspire – This year we are running a Boys Rugby development day for KS3 pupils with a focus on learning new skills, tactics and enjoyment of the sport.

At the end of the academic year we will also be running a Mini-Olympics themed event to link in with Paris 2024 and inspire pupils to be active and try new activities!

Compete – We will be running four Secondary competitions this academic year. These four sports will be Cricket, Rounders, Badminton and Basketball. These county finals will be spread out across the year and all qualifiers for these will be ran by the local SGO's.

Girls Rugby development days

As part of the 'Inspire' category of school games, Girls Rugby development events have reached 196 females in 13 secondary schools, with some fantastic results and feedback. 92% of the pupils said they would like to take part again and 54% said the events gave them 'a lot more confidence' to take part in other sports.

Take a look at the video below which provides more insight in to how valuable these events are for pupils and staff alike.
